About Jessie and Gertrude[]
On Halloween morning, in class, Miss Minchin announces that a party is going to be held to celebrate the holiday later that night. Like the other students, Jessie and Gertrude are elated about this. Before that, the decorations are hung. Jessie is hanging up the twisted streamers made of paper. When a chain-linked streamer made of paper that Ermengarde unsuccessfully tries to hang up falls and lands on Lavinia and Jessie, the latter gets annoyed, yelling out her name. Ermengarde couldn't help it since she's scared of heights. Gertrude tells Lottie to hold up a stick while the former places decorations on that. Lottie has difficulty holding the stick still. Gertrude asks her what she's doing as they'll never be finished at the rate they're going. Lottie cries and complains about the heaviness of it. Gertrude demands that she stop crying, then Lottie complains about being scolded. Jessie and Gertrude, along with the other girls, head over to get their pumpkins that Sara and Becky brought back after Miss Minchin tells them they've returned with them.
When it's time for the party, Jessie and Gertrude partake in playing games. At one point, they notice Lavinia boring a hole in a walnut boat. Jessie asks what she's doing and Gertrude asks if boring a hole would make it sink. Lavinia shushes them, telling them that it's for Sara. Lavinia has the idea of sabotaging Sara and Becky's walnut boats by making them sink so that they'll have no good fortune. As everyone watches the walnut boats sail, Lavinia attempts to get Sara and Becky's to sink by creating ripple effects. But it's not a success, as Lavinia's ends up sinking instead while Sara and Becky's stay afloat and sail next to each other, a sign that their friendship will endure. Lavinia is in disbelief at this.
After the party, Jessie and Gertrude join Lavinia in the plan to frighten the daylights out of Lottie by wearing ghost costumes. They hide under white sheets while carrying Jack O'Lanterns on their heads. When they find Lottie going into the barn, this is when they make their move. They get her attention and Lottie is so spooked, she drops her Jack O'Lantern and flees, not realizing the fire that she accidentally started when the Jack O'Lantern's candle's flame lights up some hay, setting in a blaze. Lavinia, Jessie, and Gertrude have a good laugh at Lottie's fright.
