Maria Theresia von Paradis is a character who appears in the Nico episode, "The Ghost Story". She was an 18th century, blind, Austrian musician and composer. She is one of the four spirits who Nico, Oscar, and Tom meet while they're in Mr. Caifas's mansion. She is based on the real-life historical figure.
About Maria[]
After Nico and Tom find Oscar, Tom says he'll lead him the way out of the mansion. But Oscar refuses to accept his help, doubting that blind people are capable of doing anything. A female voice is heard asking who said that about the blind and objects. The voice belongs to a female spirit who shows up playing her piano. She remarks she always loves making a blinding entrance. At the sight of her, Oscar says she's a ghost and Nico asks, "Ghost?", at the mention of this. She corrects them by saying she's a spirit and introduces herself as Maria Theresia von Paradis, who was a classical musician and composer. Mr. Caifas catches up to the boys and confronts them. Saying that he needs to relax, Maria uses her powers to make him dance. Then, she tells them to get ready as she creates a swirling effect and takes the boys, and Tom, into her past. She gives them a history lesson as they watch her past self playing piano. Oscar insists her doesn't talk to ghosts, but she still talks to him and the others anyway. She tells them she lost her sight when she was four. But because of her love for music, she didn't let that disability deter her. Oscar tries to leave, but Maria pulls him back, insisting she has more to tell and show. Oscar apologizes and she tells him not to be afraid as she's just a spirit. She takes them to another part of her past, this time, giving a small concert. She proves that it is possible for the blind to overcome the difficulties of being sightless and she became the first blind, female musician and composer.
Near the end, Maria appears once more with three male spirits outside with Nico. They encourage him not to quit and keep on pursuing, and doing whatever he wants despite his blindness. She tells the male spirits they're late for a Halloween party before they vanish as they're blown up and away by the wind.
