About Nico[]
On Halloween night, Nico is with his friends in the backyard of his home, waiting for Hertha and Bertha to arrive so they all can go trick-or-treating together. Patty tells Nico that him being dressed up as William Tell is a great idea. He figures that he'll be ready while carrying his crossbow in case there are any ghosts he might encounter. After Nico's mom, Sarah, informs him and the others that the twins are here, they go off trick-or-treating. While walking on a sidewalk, they happen to come across Oscar, who gives Nico a hard time as usual, and his sidekick, Flappy. Oscar makes fun of him and the others for trick-or-treating, telling them that's for babies, and saying he should dress up as a monster and why he's dressed as a blind man. Nico retorts that he can be anything he wants, but he'll always be a monster. After hearing that Oscar and Flappy are on their way to Mr. Caifas's mansion to have a look inside it, Nico, Tom, Patty, and Aisha change their minds about trick-or-treating, and decide to do the same instead. Hertha, Bertha, Charlie, and Boris decide to keep trick-or-treating, and the group is split in two, going their separate ways.
When Nico and the others arrive to Mr. Caifas's home, he tells the girls he hears a voice. They look up and find Flappy in a cage suspended up a tree after he became trapped in it, unwittingly stepping into it as a set-up by Mr. Caifas. Flappy tells them there's a hole in the wall as discovered by Tom and Nico compliments him for the good work. After Flappy alerts them that Mr. Caifas is coming to a window, they go off and hide. Nico asks Patty and Aisha if either of them know how to get Flappy down from there. Then, they hear Oscar's cries and Nico says they have to go rescue him. Once they get into Mr. Caifas's garage through a trap door, he and Tom head upstairs.
Nico finds Oscar when the latter accidentally walks backwards into him. Oscar is startled, by Nico tells him to relax as he'll lead the way. Oscar turns him down, disbelieving that blind people are capable of anything. Suddenly, a female voice is heard asking what he means by that. Oscar mentions that it's a ghost. As Nico asks, "Ghost?", she appears and introduces herself as the spirit of Maria Theresia von Paradis, an 18th century classical pianist and composer. Nico, Tom, and Oscar are brought into her past where she shows them a time when she practiced playing the piano, and another time when she gave a concert for a small audience. She explains to them that she still was able to achieve her goal of playing, writing, and making music in spite of blindness. Following returning to Mr. Caifas's place, Nico, Tom, and Oscar meet a second spirit that appears after being expelled from a live tea kettle's spout as smoke. The second spirit, a male one, takes the three to his past. Subsequently landing on a tree branch, he introduces himself to them as the spirit of Long Capaceous, an Italian, blind sculptor. He tells them that due to his sight lost at the age of 18, he relied on his other senses to do many things. He brings Nico to a statue and asks him what that is. Touching the statue's hair and glasses, he says it reminds him of a boy like him and asks if it is himself. Long says he's correct. Even though Long was blind, he still managed to make things out a clay and duplicate the likenesses of the real things, even without sight, and his works are still on display around Italy. Following that, Nico, Tom, and Oscar are brought to the kitchen. Oscar grabs Nico, demanding that he get away from him while Tom tugs on the bottom of Oscar's jacket from behind, Nico pushes Oscar aside, telling him that's fine as he'll just find Patty and Aisha, and a way out on his own. Suddenly, Patty and Aisha, having slid down a chute, they're heard screaming before they exit a vent and land in the kitchen on the floor. Reunited with Nico, they greet him.
Nico, Tom, Patty, and Aisha walk through a hallway. After Aisha looks in one room, Nico asks her what kind of room it is. She tells him it's a high-tech communication suite. Patty and Aisha get separated from Nico and Tom again when Aisha grabs a candle that turns out to be a lever. The wall the girls are near revolves, moving them into another room and when it's done turning, Oscar is now in the hallway with Nico and Tom. Tom attempts to approach Oscar, causing him to get jumpy. Mr. Caifas finds the three and confronts them again. Oscar offers Nico and throws him towards Mr. Caifas. Nico tells Oscar not to desert him. Oscar goes back in the direction he came when there's a flash of light, which reveals to be a second male spirit but third overall. Oscar and Mr. Caifas take off into another room. After the spirit is ordered by Mr. Caifas to leave and Oscar to be put down, this male spirit says they could never be astronauts. He goes through a wall and enters where Nico and Tom are. He tells them not to pay them any mind for their views on the blind. He takes Nico and Tom into his past, and introduces himself to them as the spirit of Lewis Flory, a blind mathematician. He explains to Nico and Tom that he used other methods to figure out numbers and didn't let his blindness stop him from pursuing math. All of a sudden, Lewis mentions he feels "bottled up". It's revealed that he was captured in Aisha's Ghost Shrinker. Soon, he escapes from it and he's glad that it has no effect in shrinking memories. Patty and Aisha begin to leave and as Oscar follows, Lewis appears to him as a bust, frightening him so much that he dashes between Patty and Aisha, making them fall on the floor. Lewis isn't so sure he should've done that, but says it was fun. Oscar, Patty, and Aisha stay closely together towards one another as they continue before finding Nico and Tom again. Elated, Patty goes to Nico for a big hug. He's glad to see her too, but says she's choking him. As they head downstairs, the stairs are flatted, turning into a slide, causing Nico and the others to slip down it.
For Nico, Tom, and Oscar, they come to the end of the slide, exiting through a cellar. An earthquake begins and flowers, and shrubs, grow out of nowhere. Oscar asks where they came from and the voice of the third male spirit, and fourth overall, says they're here as a result of Oscar's comment about the blind's incapabilities of doing anything. When Mr. Caifas comes out the cellar as well, he threatens the boys with a machete. Before he can do any harm to them, he's chased away by a swarm of bees seny by the spirit. This spirit brings Nico and Tom to a garden. The spirit tells them that regardless of him not having had sight, he became a botanist and chemistry successfully in the end. Nico tells him he's afraid of being in unfamiliar places, but the spirit tells him that blind people just use their other senses to get them through those. Nico and Tom enjoy the flowers and greenery that are blown up, and surround them as they float, and Nico, and Tom, enjoy it. Once Nico and Tom are brought back to the outside of the mansion, the four spirits encourage Nico to keep on going at whatever he desires. He tells them he will and that he'll never give up in spite of his disability. Maria tells the male spirits they've got to get going to the Halloween dinner and they vanish. Nico and Tom reunite with Patty, and Aisha, gladly once again. As Flappy is still stuck up in the air and in the cage, Aisha gets the idea of using one of the arrows from Nico's bag and borrows his crossbow to shoot down the cage in order to free Flappy. Nico is surprised as he never thought it would come in handy. In one shot, Aisha manages to get Flappy down and out of the cage. Once that's accomplished, Flappy goes to give her a thank-you-kiss, but she avoids him as Nico and Patty laugh.
After midnight, Nico, Tom, Patty, and Aisha meet up with Hertha, Bertha, and Charlie at a cemetery. Even though the latter three weren't so successful at trick-or-treating, Nico says the most important thing is they didn't quit. Patty says she was spooked the whole time while in the mansion. Nico felt the same way, but adamantly states that hard work and determination is what got him through it. Hertha and Bertha hear an eerie sound. Frightened and holding each other, they ask what that is. Nico simply says it's the wind. He and the others then look around for Oscar when they notice he hasn't joined them.
